Position; We are seeking a self-motivated, energetic, responsible person to assume the #2 position on a construction crew with the intent of developing that person into a crew lead for when the economy warms up and project levels return to where they were in the last few years.
Our “straw man” has most or all of these attributes (broken into categories):
CHARACTER: 1. Integrity is everything. It is the bedrock upon which trust is built, and trust is the glue that holds the operation together, from customer to company to crew. With everyone being truthful, the trust flows up and down. 2. Drive and dedication are keys to building landscapes and careers. 3. Fiscal responsibility…your house is in order and you understand the company’s need to deliver work efficiently for profitability… from which everyone can benfit.
EXPERIENCE: No less than 3 current, consecutive years in landscape or closely related construction, preferably with the same company. Solid employer references are a must, other industry-related referencess will be considered and references to family and friends are problematic.
SKILLS: 1. Very competent in the safe and productive use of skid steer loaders and small excavators. 2. Well versed in determining and working with grades for everything from walls to patios to drainage. 3. Skilled in the proper (ICPI) methods of interlocking paver installation and the use of all tools of that trade. 4. Skilled in proper segmental wall block construction techniques. NCMA certification or knowledge are a bonus. 5. Capable of installing all the valving, plumbing, wiring and controls associated with irrigation systems. 6. Knowledgeable in the basics of carpentry and capable with power saws and all related hand power tools for the construction of fences, arbors, benches and pergolas. 7. Finally, soil preparation and plant identification/proper planting procedures are required. Basic knowledge is okay if there is a desire to learn which we can help with.

REALITY CHECK; These are challenging times for all construction contractors. We currently have a backlog of work extending through most of the fall and have a number of pipeline projects being estimated, as well as marketing initiatives that we expect to yield work through the winter. But as everyone knows, until the contract is signed, there are no certainties. We are of course in good standing with the WA Employment Security Department, paying all premiums and accepting of our share of responsibillity should a layoff be required. Our ultra-low premium rating (the lowest WA offers) though is proof positive that we have almost never laid good crew off in all these years. Good people earn their keep!
