POSITION: Health Assistant LOCATION: as assigned by supervisor
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Provides health care support services to students and the school nurse, including administer first-aid and medications, assisting with medical screenings, maintaining records and ensuring procedural compliance. Provides back-up to school office staff.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Hourly rate*: $14.53-$17.92* per hour depending on similar, related experience (Level 5)
Hours: Seven (7) hours per day
Days per year: 180 student days
Holidays: 10 holidays from September 1-June 30

QUALIFICATIONS AND CONDITIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the responsibilities satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the requirements that would enable an individual to perform at appropriate levels. 1. High school graduate or GED.
2. Experience working with school aged students in a school setting preferred.
3. Possession and maintenance of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification and First-Aid Certification required.
4. Knowledge of the basic health care needs of school-aged individuals.
5. Demonstrated ability to learn and interpret health issues related to school-aged individuals.
6. Demonstrated ability to learn and apply best course of action related to health issues of school-aged individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
8. Demonstrated ability to follow directions with a minimum of supervision and complete assigned task(s) in a timely manner.
9. Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written expression.
10. Ability to use general office machines, including computers utilizing related software programs.
11. Ability to learn and interpret related laws, rules, and regulations.
12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community members.
13. Reliable transportation required.
14. Bilingual candidate preferred.
15. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters in an ethical manner.
16. HIV/Hepatitis certification required after hire.
17. Significant multi-cultural experience and expertise preferred.
Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; be exposed to childhood diseases; be exposed to, or responsible for, potential health and safety risks and discomfort incurred by students or self. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and crouch, crawl, bend, or kneel; stand for prolonged periods; be exposed to high noise levels; lift at least 50 pounds; and experience demands from a diversity of others, including students, parents, community and staff; demands of constant change. May be required to travel between work sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Depending upon the assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, which are a representative sample of the level of work appropriate for this class.
1. Dispenses daily medications to students, as appropriate.
2. Administers basic first aid, including bandages for cuts, scrapes, and twisted ankles.
3. Performs basic medical examinations for head-lice, chicken pox and other childhood conditions.
4. Provides support to students who require one-on-one support on personal issues relating to health care.
5. Provides a variety of administrative supports to the school nurse, including maintaining required records and reports, writing and sending notices and letters.
6. Assists the school nurse in conducting health screenings, including vision, hearing, and scoliosis; sets-up screening, record screening results on health cards, and send referral letters as directed.
7. Produces immunization status reports to identify students needing required immunizations, and inform parents of requirements.
8. Maintain cleanliness of health room, including sterilization.
9. Orders and maintains stock of health room supplies, including the annual KCDA order.
10. Provides support to school office staff when needed, i.e., answer phones, input data, filing, etc.
11. May be required to provide support in Paraeducator assignment areas, as necessary.
12. Performs related duties of a similar scope and nature as required.
